Oklahoma City Thunder Launch Championship Defense with Nail-Biting Double Overtime Victory
The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the game-winning baskets late in double overtime as the defending champions opened their NBA title defense with a 125-124 win over the Houston Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, securing the champions a positive start.
The Rockets' big man top-scored with 39 points and also connected on a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.
But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points, was instrumental alongside the game's hero.
"Determination and defence," Gilgeous-Alexander said of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defence to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."
Before the game, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the squad were presented with their championship rings.
Oklahoma City defeated the Indiana Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.
The Pacers will have the chance to secure some early revenge on this Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was not enough to prevent his new team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the road team.
Los Angeles were without the league's top scorer LeBron James as he recovers from sciatica.
